The Story

Lester Burnham is suffering a mid-life crisis. He hates his job, his wife Carolyn is cheating on him and his daughter Jane thinks he's a looser.
When you've got nothing to lose, you might as well risk everything. So Lester drastically changes his life around when he quits his job and works at a fast food restaurant. He becomes infatuated with one of his daughter's friends, Angela which causes him to start working out to gain her attention. Meanwhile, his daughter Jane is developing a friendship with a shy boy-next-door named Ricky, who lives under a roof governed by a very strict marine father and a speechless mother.

The Reviews

"American Beauty" is a comedy because we laugh at the absurdity of the hero's problems. And a tragedy because we can identify with his failure - not the specific details, but the general outline.

roger ebert

American Beauty is a triumph of acting, writing and directing that defies glib description. Is the film farce, tragedy, thriller, fantasy, sitcom, skin flick or moral fable? Yes to all of the above.

peter travers - rolling stone

Flawlessly cast and brimming with dark, acid wit, American Beauty is a smart, provocative high point of late '90s mainstream Hollywood film.

rotten tomatoes

With its parade of neurotics, psychotics, bigots and deceivers, American Beauty is an endlessly rewatchable black comedy.
