graphic design principles I

Hope you had a lovely holiday, and that you’re rested and recharged, ready for more :)
Let’s take a look at some established as well as popular graphic design principles and their possible inspiration for design for the web. While working on your next mini project, start your initial design process by considering how some of these established concepts might contribute to your design.

please note: some of the examples have since been updated. I’m keeping the slides as this now allows us to compare their current to their new design.

In preparation for your next mini project – let’s have a closer look at the design concepts behind these examples:

  1. The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero
  2. HTML & CSS by Jon Duckett

Choose one of the examples and summarise the effectiveness of the current design. Select one single page and produce a rough mockup to show a different design approach.
Present your findings to the class.

Great work Su, I’m going to sort out my RWD now!
Jenn: great choice of colour and I like the use of triptych images to add unity.
Sergi: sweet gun icon – fits great with the design of the book cover.

    Thanks!

    Lovely work!
Su, like the responsive design! Content perfectly distributed in all viewport sizes.

Jenn, very clean and balanced site. Very good use of the white space and colour (guess it’s for Zeldman’s beanie?)

Marthe, you’ve given a very good contrast with the colour and the layout, that gives a nice hierarchy to the site. I would put the name of the author a bit up, though. I love the quotation marks ;)

    Hey M!

Love the colour! Hmm, maybe move the yellow tab down slightly to add more balance?
