project planning

Tips

  • split the project up into phases
  • be as specific or as general as you like - but make sure to divide the work logically
  • plan for writes and re-writes
  • schedule in time for optimisation and testing
  • check your progress against your plan to stay on track and meet your deadline!

online tools

NOTE: which tool you use for your planning is up to you, the tool is unimportant compared to the planning itself. Pen and paper, calendars or spreadsheets - whatever works best for you :)

ideal stage of project work

At this point you will have made a start on the content of your website - ideally having completed the following:

  • research completed
  • draft content written
  • information architecture in place
  • site plan completed

Review your progress and plan out the remaining work to manage the time and work.

NOTE: Pixlr X is the basic version of the editor, perfect to start with if you're very new to image editing outside of your usual apps. Quick and easy for resizing and optimising :)

NOTE: Pixlr E is the advanced version of the editor, offering further tools and options. Best for image touch-ups, cut-outs and adjustments :)

Refining your idea

Now is the time to get your plans finalised, to review your concept one final time and ensure that this will work well. Let's work on some notes to prepare for your content production.

Your target group & their needs

Copy & paste the questions into a new post on your website and aim to answer them in view of your chosen brief. You can title this post as you prefer; something like 'content planning' might fit.

NOTE: The list includes prompts after the questions. For this task: only post the questions themselves, followed by your answers!

Personas

After the questions and answers, put together 6-8 profile images as examples of your user personas. Present these as image gallery and add captions to each person to give them a fictional name. You can use one of the image libraries (repeated here for easy access) as they offer plenty of options, make sure to phrase your search query carefully.

post your links to this post ツ

Questions

  1. Who is my site for?
State your chosen target group and aim for a narrow focus.
  2. What does a typical site visitor need?
Make note of the reasons why someone might come to your website, what their needs are in terms of finding your site useful.
  3. How will my site help them?
Consider what your site can offer in order to be helpful, supportive or motivational to your target group.
  4. What would be a typical scenario?
Outline a typical scenario of how one of your user might benefit from your site. E.g. this person has difficulties with concentrating and is looking for advice. Your site will include a section of resources perhaps, or stories of people describing how they managed to overcome the same issue.

to-do list

  1. write up your project schedule
this is for your own benefit only. Draft a plan for the outstanding work, list details of content, work on production and editing as well as additions to the site; include time for theme finding and testing etc.
  2. write down questions
The week after the break will be our final face-to-face session and it will be your chance to ask us about anything in person. Make note of any issues, any queries or anything else you'd like us to talk through during our workshop.

take notes

While you continue the work throughout the break, make note of any questions or queries so we can address them in our final session.

Just FYI: We will have one more session together in week 10 which will be online. As always, make sure to ask lots of questions about things you're unsure about, or little problems you run into with your publishing of content - happy to help ツ
