project planning
Tips
- split the project up into phases
- be as specific or as general as you like - but make sure to divide the work logically
- plan for writes and re-writes
- schedule in time for optimisation and testing
- check your progress against your plan to stay on track and meet your deadline!

online tools
NOTE: which tool you use for your planning is up to you, the tool is unimportant compared to the planning itself. Pen and paper, calendars or spreadsheets - whatever works best for you :)
ideal stage of project work
At this point you will have made a start on the content of your website - ideally having completed the following:
- research completed
- draft content written
- information architecture in place
- site plan completed
Review your progress and plan out the remaining work to manage the time and work.
Using Google Sheets
Step-by-step
- Open Google Sheets
- top menu: File -> New -> From template
- Select template
- Edit and save to your Google Drive
content out
focus on content first, site plan next - then design.
check licenses for sourced media, include references/links.
inclusive design
focus on people and their different needs and preferences.
get feedback and do testing with different apps/devices.
optimise for speed
edit all media for highest quality and lowest file weight.
add alternative text on upload.
REMINDER: WordPress - pages vs posts
WP tips
- carefully plan your IA before naming your categories
- consider your phrasing and tone/language
- check on the slug and ensure clear wording
- don’t fragment your content but look for clear organisation and labelling
- make use of tags if beneficial to user journey
(do not use without good reason!)
NOTE: Pixlr X is the basic version of the editor, perfect to start with if you're very new to image editing outside of your usual apps. Quick and easy for resizing and optimising :)

NOTE: Pixlr E is the advanced version of the editor, offering further tools and options. Best for image touch-ups, cut-outs and adjustments :)

Refining your idea
Before the spring break, it would be a good idea to get your plans finalised, to review your concept one final time and ensure that this will work well.
Cubing group work
This is an exercise in trying to view your ideas from a different point of view. This technique is often used for brain storming and allows you to find the right conclusions on deciding on an idea that might, or might not work.

Feedback cubing
-
summarise your idea/concept
State your idea and your target group clearly ~ and then pass the sheet onto the person sitting to your left for feedback -
give feedback
With the other person's sheet in hand, read their idea and comment into the boxes labeled with the number 2. ~ when done, hand the paper back. -
conclusion
Read the comments on your idea and discuss these to understand how they might guide any changes to your idea, make note of you conclusions.
to-do list
- write up your project schedule
this is for your own benefit only. Draft a plan for the outstanding work, list details of content, work on production and editing as well as additions to the site; include time for theme finding and testing etc. - review your content (ongoing)
get feedback on your work as and when you can and use this to review and revise your content.
take notes
After the spring break, we will have one more face-to-face day together. While you work on your site, make note of any questions or queries so we can make the most of our final day together on campus.
