No site will be complete without good responsive design which allows the content to adapt to the viewport, be that a computer, TV or mobile. But always bear in mind who you design for ~ your web geeks are not your typical user ;-)
As you will have read by now, three years ago, the wonderful Ethan Marcotte coined the term "responsive web design", or RWD, via his article on the (just recently redesigned) A List Apart. It is still the perfect introduction to the topic :)
Ethan quotes John Allsopp who stated in his article "A Dao of Web Design" in 2000:
The control which designers know in the print medium, and often desire in the web medium, is simply a function of the limitation of the printed page. We should embrace the fact that the web doesn’t have the same constraints, and design for this flexibility. But first, we must “accept the ebb and flow of things.”
