digital practices

A warm welcome to my new students
Digital Practices SCS6079 ✭ MA Digital Media & Society

Our sessions will take a new form this year due to the many changes brought on by COVID19. Our module will now be entirely online with many of you joining from abroad. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and working on your projects with you. While you will find all official material, time table and guidelines in MUSE and Blackboard - this site is the main resource website for our module.

Please know that I will appreciate your input and feedback from start to finish. I hope that we will be able to discuss what works and what does not in terms of our sessions - and with your help, we'll find our rhythm :)

How you will learn and work on your project

Some of our session will take place online with some synchronous time each week when we get together for lectures and workshops. In addition, I will set you exercises and tasks which will contribute to your overall project work which you will work on in your own time. I would like to ask you to get in touch with me to ask for my advice, feedback or my help with any issues or concerns you may have.

Over the past few years, some of my students on this module have commented on the fact that they did not think it right to ask, and that they did not expect a reply or support via email from their teachers, going by their personal experiences. Please know that I believe that the only way you'll learn is by asking questions! By being curious and experimenting, by making mistakes and by asking for help and answers when you need them. Please don't be shy, or too polite, to talk to me, I can only help if you ask me :)

Please be proactive and get in touch. We might be doing things remotely but that does not mean that you are on your own, I'm always at the other end of an email! :) Just ask - happy to help, honestly :)

update

Thank you all for being patient and flexible when our first week did not go too well. I've now reshuffled the planning, we'll use Blackboard Collaborate for future sessions which will hopefully hold up better ;)
I'll still be posting the info on that week session's page.

We'll still all get together on fridays, starting with a live lecture at 8:00 BST. I'll give you a talk on a specific subject and there'll be time for questions. As a change to previous plans, we'll now have workshops in 4 smaller groups and Claire will be with us to help out. The idea is that we will go through the practical aspects of what was covered in the lecture and you can ask all the questions :)

From 14:00 - 15:00 BST, there is the open workshop session. I'll be online and will be ready to answer more questions, and to work with you on the exercises and the production of your website. This is not mandatory but I hope you'll pop in and discuss your ideas and progress with me.

Here's a quick video to show you where to find the links to current/ongoing sessions on the day, and how to watch the recordings afterwards.
