In Phoenix, Arizona, office worker Marion Crane is unhappy that she cannot marry her boyfriend, Sam Loomis, due to his debts.

When a client drops off $40,000, Marion decides that instead of banking it she will steal it and make her way to Sam in California. Packing her things she quickly leaves town, trading in her car to avoid being followed.

Tired of the long drive and the stormy weather, she pulls off the highway and ends up at the Bates Motel, where she meets the proprietor, Norman Bates, a quiet young man with a seemingly overbearing mother…
