About the book
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first book in a series written about Dexter Morgan. He is a member of the forensics team at the Miami Police Department, a devoted partner to his girlfriend, caring father to her children, and a loving brother to his sister Deb. The only problem is that he is also one of the most prolific serial killers to have ever operated in the USA.
Behind the mask, Dexter is a cold blooded killer. Over the course of his life, he has perfected the skill of pretending to be like everyone else. He is an expert at blending in and seems like an everyday guy, unless you give him a reason to show you his other side, and only those who deserve it get to meet the other Dexter.
"I found the grave,” Harry says. “There were a lot of bones in there, Dexter."
At an early age, Dexter's step father Harry, who was a decorated police officer, saw that Dexter was different. However, instead of institutionalising him, he decided to guide him. Harry was able to provide Dexter with a code to follow that has allowed him to go unpunished, but that also allows him to punish those that meet the code.
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is an excellent introduction to this most unlikely anti-hero. You learn what it is like to try and live with a terrible secret and also what happens when Dexter finds out that someone just as deadly as him knows it.
