About the novel

In 1904 J. M. Barrie wrote a play called 'Peter & Wendy', which he made into a novel in 1911. Barrie revised the play several times and the 1911 novel is based on one of these revisions. There are also various film adaptations and novels by other authors created around the same character.

Peter Pan is a boy who doesn't want to grow up and lives on the island of Neverland ('second to the right and straight on till morning'). The other main protagonist of the story is Wendy Darling, who accompanies Peter to Neverland along with her brothers John and Michael.

Peter comes to the Darling's bedroom window every night to listen to their mother's bedtime stories. One evening he is spotted and has to make a hasty retreat whereby he loses his shadow. The scene in the extract plays when he comes to retrieve it and wakes Wendy in the process.
