TODAY
“Who wants to live forever” is a song that speaks directly to people's hearts. The fear of dying and our will to live forever both of them are part of the human vanity for immortality. The thought that we will live long and possibly forever make us pospone things in our lives, makes us forget to live the moment and find happyness in the simple things like love. In the end..there is hope and liberation...as long as we learn to appreciate the "today"
The song was written by the English rock band Queen. The song is the sixth track in the album “A kind of Magic” that was released in June 1986 and was written by guitarist Brian May for the soundtrack of the film Highlander. The big success of the song and it's everlasting meaning had as result dozens of remakes the following years.
Although the song was written as a soundtrack for the movie highlander I believe the lyrics are inspired by many other sad factors that was happening around this period to the band that led to such an emotionally strong song. Everybody have their own interpretation about songs and this is mine for this song. Hope you will enjoy it
The song starts with Bryan May making a sad statement
“There's no time for us
There's no place for us”
Immediately this evokes us fear and despair. It's like the song is telling us that we are doomed simply because this is the nature of life. Then like the great philosophers used to do, the song start making questions to the audience...in order the audience to discover the truth...
What is this thing that builds our dreams, yet slips away from us?
What are we made of? What are our souls made of? What is the essense of life that make us each and every one of use so unique? Questions that possibly we will never have an answer. Then Brian May continues to ask in a very calm and peaceful voice
Who wants to live forever?
And silence... Freddie Mercury following Bryan May makes us another fearful statement that evokes more feelings to the audience.
There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us
Again despair, and fear
Then Freddie Mercury raises his powerful voice and ask us again
Who wants to live forever?
You think that live forever is the solution? Our constant vanity...our never ending pursuit for immortality will it be a gift or a burdain?
Who dares to love forever?
And then if you believe that you can handle immortality ask yourself this simple thing. Do you dare to love forever? Are you so strong to love forever the same person till eternity?
Oh oo woh, when love must die
If yes, what if your other half is not immortal and die. What will you do you do then if your heart wanted to love that person forever? You will live eternity in pain? The “gift of immortality” can make a simple thing like love a life in pain.
And then...suddenly...HOPE...
But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
This what love is and love makes any life worth living no matter the hurt or pain even if in the end you know you might lose the person that you love. And then the song blossoms. Freddie mercury with his powerful voice but still with an underlying sadness in his voice tells us thawe can have forever.
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
This is the Joy of life, love.
Love is so strong that can make today seem like an eternity.
Who waits forever anyway?
In the last sentence with a big dose of mockery Freddie Mercury devaluates immortality and eternity like it's something insignificant that doesn't even worth bothering with hence emphasing to the moment to the today reminding us to live every moment of our lives.
Queen was a rock band that contributed significantly at the world's music heritage. May their songs and spirit never to be forgotten.
